Background of the Study
School feeding programs (SFPs) have been widely recognized as a significant intervention in addressing malnutrition, particularly among children in developing countries. In Taraba State, one of Nigeria's less developed regions, malnutrition rates among school-age children remain high, leading to stunted growth, weakened immune systems, and poor cognitive development (Ibrahim & Olagunju, 2024). The State has long been grappling with food insecurity, poor access to nutritious foods, and inadequate healthcare services, which have contributed to these elevated malnutrition rates (Oluwaseun et al., 2023).
School feeding programs, which provide free or subsidized meals to students, have been implemented in various parts of Nigeria as part of national and state-level strategies to combat child malnutrition (Adebayo et al., 2025). These programs aim not only to provide adequate nutrition but also to improve school attendance and performance (Tijani & Musa, 2024). Despite the potential benefits, research on the effectiveness of these programs in Taraba State remains limited. Studies in other regions have shown that school feeding programs can have a positive impact on children's nutritional status, reducing the incidence of undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies (Olayemi et al., 2023). However, it remains unclear how well these programs are functioning in Taraba State and whether they are effectively reaching the most vulnerable populations.
The need for a comprehensive evaluation of the school feeding programs in Taraba State is crucial, as the success of these programs depends on local contextual factors such as the distribution of resources, administrative efficiency, and cultural preferences regarding food. This study seeks to assess the impact of school feeding programs on malnutrition rates among children in Taraba State, providing critical data to guide future interventions.
Statement of the Problem
Malnutrition remains a persistent problem among children in Taraba State, despite the implementation of school feeding programs aimed at reducing the nutritional deficit. However, there is insufficient evidence on the actual impact of these programs in improving children's nutritional status in the region. As a result, policymakers and stakeholders lack clear insights into how these programs can be optimized to better address malnutrition, particularly in rural and underserved areas. This gap in research and understanding needs to be addressed to ensure that school feeding programs are more effective in reducing malnutrition rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on evaluating the impact of school feeding programs on the nutritional status of children in Taraba State, collecting data from primary schools across urban and rural areas. It will involve nutritional assessments, school attendance records, and academic performance data. The study’s limitations include the potential challenges of obtaining accurate and complete data due to reporting inconsistencies and the reliance on self-reported information from school administrators and parents. Additionally, the study will not analyze long-term health outcomes beyond the duration of the school feeding program.
